Beet it!

And now I have that Michael Jackson in my head and I don’t even like it!

First things first- I am quite excited because today there was a little post from me over at the healthy living blogs blog.

When I got home from work today I had a try of a Beet it shot. I was sent a couple to try, and as the advice is to take it 1-3 hours before exercise I thought today was perfect (didn’t fancy it for breakfast).

The shot is very small (cute bottle) and very pink! It is only made from beetroot and some lemon juice.

There is a lot of information on the site, but I was sent a little card explaining the science behind it. Basically beetroot juice is high in nitrate, which is then broken down into nitric oxide (NO) in the blood. This thins the blood, improves blood flow and lowers blood pressure. It also increases oxygen efficiency as your body can use the oxygen from the NO instead of the oxygen you breathe.  It also may turn urine pink.

I cannot quite put my finger on what it tasted like. It did not taste of beetroot (although I love beetroot I do not fancy drinking it)- I think it tasted a bit like tomato juice maybe. It was quite a strong taste, not delicious, but not unpleasant either. I had body pump this evening and I did feel full of energy (but then, this week I have been feeling good). I think the science behind it is interesting, and I think that you would probably have to have some every day to really feel the effects.

But if you are thinking of trying it, I would say have a go (but not for breakfast) as it tastes much better than I thought it would!

PS- A few more days to go on the Teapigs giveaway 🙂

    1. It really did not taste like beetroot at all. More like tomato. I got an email from the person who sent them to me for the trial, and he said that others have also compared it to tomato, so at least I am not the only one!

  1. I really like beetroot, but am not sure about shots of anything pre-workout! I’d rather make sure my energy levels are good through regular diet. Though I must admit I sometimes have a coffee and a banana pre-workout. So maybe it’s just the price that puts me off..

    1. I wasn’t like caffiene or anything, but I think the science behind it would mean you were more efficient using oxygen if you had it regularly. I didn’t see how much they cost (I never normally look when I try stuff!).
      🙂
