Catch up

The weekend (and more importantly, half term) is finally here! Thanks for all the lovely wishes- all put a smile on my face!

I was back to work on Wednesday (lots of people were very surprised that I was even off as I amΒ hardly everΒ off work- in the last 4 years I think I have had one day off before these two!)- for some long days as we had parents evening on Wednesday and Thursday. But the antibiotics were kicking in, as was the copious amounts of water (and Andy got me some cranberry juice) and I was feeling better.Β  I kept on thinking that I might have a run on friday when I got home, but in the end I was shattered so decided on some baking instead!

I made the Blackstrap ginger cookies from the vegan cookie book – yum! Although the 3 rounded tsp ginger recommended meant these are very strong, so next time I would reduce it to 2 tsp I think.

This morning started with oats in a bucket! As I finished a massive tub of meridian pb (not the one I bought last week don’t worry- this was from months ago!) I went for it! Although the porridge looked rather pitiful in the bottom of such a huge container!

It also looked rather unappetising in the picture- but it was yum! Porridge with allspice, dried cranberries and cinnamon, plus the pb scrapings from the tub.

Now on to the running side of things. My plan has got rather complicated, as I keep on moving things around. I was due for a 13 miler today, but as I was so tired (and had not run for a week) I decided against that. Instead as I was feeling alright I decided to test the legs and do a 4 mile run (I am due for a 4 mile interval run later in the week, so I pinched it and changed it to a steady run)- making sense? Anyway, the run was very hard work. I still have a bit of an ache in my stomach, and this seemed to get worse while I was running, so in the end I did only 3.7 miles. I was so tired once I got home.

So now what I am going to do it have tomorrow as a rest, and make sure I get out for a walk, and then try the 13 miles on monday. But next weekend my long run is down to be 10 miles, so I think that on monday if I only do 10 miles than I will do the 13 miles next weekend instead. Does that make sense? It’s all ifs and buts at the moment though.

I am going to make some kidney bean burgers for tea tonight which I am really looking forward to as I have not made anything like that for ages πŸ™‚

I also think the antibiotics are making me feel a bit rubbish generally- I had to have some a few years ago and I think I was recommended some probiotic vitamins to help, so I might hunt some of those down tomorrow. Any recommendations?

Cheers and laters dudes πŸ™‚

  1. YAY for oats in a bucket!! Haha it does look funny with the oats in a tiny puddle at the bottom! πŸ˜›

Also YAY for feeling a bit better! Well done for attempting your run anyway, and doing so well despite being ill! You’re AMAZING Maria πŸ™‚

Oh and try Berocca!! Seriously, it gives you WINGS! πŸ˜€

  2. Stacey and Emma- yeah the oats looked ridiculous but once it was suggested it became a challenge! Still tated good which is the point haha!
Oh thanks for the Emma- will look out for Berocca when I am shopping tomorrow. And thanks for the lovely comment too πŸ™‚

  3. Argh ~ you beat me to it with the Oats In A Bucket! I had *thiiiis* much PB left in my huge tub and was going to take on the challenge on Monday! Mind you’ I bet my oats come right up to the top of the rim πŸ˜‰

So glad to hear you’re on the mend: what you’ve done with your training plan sounds emminently sensible and your training definitely won’t suffer for it. I am certain you’ll come back stronger than ever from the rest.

Do you mean probiotic digestive enzymes? Because Holland and Barratt always used to do a vegan acidophilis (argh, can’t spell it!) supplement. Antibiotics make me feel rubbish too: so sorry you have to take them πŸ™

    *hugs*

  4. “(I am due for a 4 mile interval run later in the week, so I pinched it and changed it to a steady run)- making sense?”

    Completely makes sense! πŸ˜‰

What’s the LSR after the 10 miler though? I might be tempted to just do next week as per the schedule, perhaps taking a little easier in places (do speed mileage as steady mileage?), and then just continue as normal. You’re used to running half marathon distance, and I think overall, giving your body a little more time to rest and ease back in during a well-timed step down week is going to help you more than sticking religiously to a (re-jigged) plan. In the end a few missed miles is not what matters; what matters is that the miles you do put in are good quality, and that in between, you get good quality rest. That’s what gets you round, not the programme itself πŸ™‚

Glad you’re feeling better though. And LOL at oats in a bucket!! πŸ˜€

  5. Glad everyone likes the oats in a bucket! Jess I look forward to seeing them on your blog soon haha! And thanks for the tip off about Holland and Barrett- that is the kind of thing I mean- get me some good bacteria!
Alison- my long run was 13 miles this week, 10 miles next week , 14 miles the week after, so I might do 13 next weekend and 14 the week after or something like that. You are right the miles need to be quality- I will just have to see how I feel on each day.

  6. Kidney bean burgers sound yummy! I hate taking antibiotics, luckily I haven’t needed them for years but they usually ended up with me feeling worse. Sounds like your body just needs more time to heal, bugs can take so much out of you x

  7. Glad your starting to feel a bit better, even though the antibiotics are a bit rubbish.
It sounds like you’ve got a sensible approach to your running schedule this week, just make sure that you are feeling better before you get right back into it.

  8. You beat me to oats in a bucket too – but I only got the idea because Jess (Almost Over Now) suggested it to me – you two are both way ahead of me!
And as I only got my bucket last weekend, I’m going to have to get eating πŸ™‚
Glad you’re feeling better though and half-term has definitely come at the right time! x

  9. I think your plan sounds about right but you’ll need to play it by ear, maybe even setting off to do one distance but giving yourself the opportunity to do more or less depending on how you feel.

  10. Rob you are very right- I will see how I feel and see how much I get done this week, annoying as it is!
Eleanor- it took me ages to work my way through the pb so oats in a bucket is a long way off now!
Laura- antibiotics do make me feel rubbish you are right (although these are not as bad as the other ones I had).
Sarah- thanks I will take it easy (I have Andy telling me off too!)
