I never used to be a fan of rice cakes. I used to find the texture weird, and they used to stick to the roof of my mouth a bit.
Then I discovered chocolate covered rice cakes and things changed. I quite often buy the dark chocolate ones from Waitrose (Itsu I think), and then I was offered the chance to review some Kallo ones.
First up, I had to try the chocolate orange ones, and they did not disappoint, being covered in little orange crunchy flecks.
They are so tasty! I love dark chocolate and orange together, what more is there to say? They are made with whole grain brown rice too.
The quinoa and seeds ones were lovely too, although quite sweet tasting. They were covered in seeds, hence the before-topping photo.
Topped with black bean spread and avocado- such a good snack.
Of course they are always good covered in hummus, nut butter or nutella (my favourite- I can’t believe I don’t have a picture of this, although I am sure you can imagine what it looks like).
I didn’t try the yoghurt ones as I am not keen on yoghurt coated things- I took them into work and they looked pretty. You can see their whole range of rice cakes here– I like the sound of the blueberry and vanilla ones, and ordered some balsamic vinegar ones from ocado as I quite like savoury snacks like that, although to me they tasted a bit more like marmite (but I like marmite too).
They are more of a at-home snack as I find they do not last well in my bag, plus I think they generally need some sort of topping (apart from the chocolate coated ones) but I am a bit of a convert. I only wish I had a tin big enough for them- I have a ryvita tin but the big tubes of rice cakes don’t fit in it!
Are you a rice cake fan? What would be your ideal flavour? Of course rather predictably I think that a chocolate peanut butter topping would go so well.
* I was sent some rice cakes in exchange for a review. All opinions are my own.
I’ve never tried a chocolate coated one, but it does sound interesting! I have to admit, I’ve always liked rice cakes, despite many cries to “urgh you’re eating cardboard”. I like the salt and vinegar ones the best I think, but I’m happy with a salted rice cake with peanut butter on top (life is better with peanut butter!).
I agree with that!
The choc orange looks delicious! I used to have rice cakes a lot as a child, can’t believe all the options now!
I think they do a caramel one too. Yes loads of options now!
A chocolate coated rice cake? This has my name all over it! I also used to love the marmite ones but haven’t had these in forever!
I have not tried marmite ones- I do like marmite but I don’t love it, plus it means it can’t really have any toppings.
I do find the idea of chocolate covered rice cakes strange, but the chocolate ones are great! I’m really glad that one of my favourite savoury snacks can now be bought/eaten as a sweet too.
I like the savoury and sweet ones- good for variety.
I love the Itsu rice cakes. I often have a couple mid-afternoon if I’m feeling the need to be perked up!
I love the sound of the balsamic flavoured ones! I think my ideal topping would be hummus. You just can’t go wrong with hummus!
I agree- but you can’t put it on in advance otherwise the rice cake goes soggy!
I used to eat rice cakes quite often but I haven’t bought any in ages, I like oatcakes now instead.
I love oatcakes- Rude Health do some tasty ones.
I do like rice cakes but much prefer corn cakes now! I had some for breakfast with nut butters this morning. I do love those packs of chocolate covered ones you can get on the go as well 🙂
Yes those are my favourite ones 🙂
I like the dark choc coated ones!
Me too!
I love rice cakes and eat them a lot for snacks, breakfast, lunch and dinner. One if my fav combos is plain rice cakes topped with butter, sliced boiled eggs, mushrooms and tomato sauce if course! I also love the chocolate ones but as if yet haven’t tried the new flavours : )
I suppose it is good that they are gluten free.
The chocolate orange ones are amazing, aren’t they!
Yes they are!
