Festive cupcakes!

My day started with pumpkin baked oatmeal from the lovely CCK website- recipe here– while listening to Hard FiΒ as we are off to see them tomorrow- woo!

I used one packet of gingerbread porridge, more spices, a big dollop of pumpkin puree and 1/2 cup coconut milk and baked for 25 mins. It filled 2 ramekins, and I had them both. Yum! I will be having this again for a weekend breakfast πŸ™‚

Then I was off to the course run by Sweet and Floral (for anyone vaguely local).

I did one before and this one was a Christmas cupcake one.

We made:

A present wrapped in a bow, and a snowman.

A bauble (with glitter!!!).

We used a knife to create stitching detail on the bow- how clever.

I think the snowman is my favourite- so cute.

We also made a cheeky elf and a Father Christmas.

All of them together. It was such a relaxing way to spend Sunday morning/ lunchtime. There were only 6 of us, so we all sat around a big table. Rolling out the icing, colouring some of it, cutting it out…. it is all just really enjoyable.

After that I went on a quick run (4 miles- trying to get up to the 60 mile challenge- I think I have done 35 miles now) in the freezing cold! Then it was a quick shower before dashing over to Andy’s parents.

Doing the course reminded me of when we used to do art at school or uni- I always found it so relaxing. I was alwaysΒ al-rightΒ at art, not brilliant but it is always something I used to love (even though I am not that good with the really fiddly bits)- something about the colours, cutting, just doing something physical which you don’t have to concentrate too hard on, but at the same time your mind cannot wander to other things (work!)- I just love it- the three hours whizzed by. I loved science lessons too (for the opposite reasons- so interesting and they were so logical) but art somehow is just so relaxing.

What was your favourite lesson/ subject at school?

  1. Art was my favourite lesson by far. Until my GCSE art teacher distroyed my confidence by picking apart everything I did. I had a lovely tutor for my home study A-Level though, and I will never stop regretting not pursuing my love for art at BA level, despite my decidedly average ‘talent.’

Those cupcakes are just brilliant, particularly the bauble. You can’t go wrong with a bit of festive sparkle πŸ™‚

    xxx

  2. Oh my GOSH those cupcakes are ridiculously cute! I just couldn’t eat one of those- I’d want to look at it forever!
My favourite subjects were Spanish, German and Art. I was never academically minded!

  3. I hated PE too!
Jessica you never know what the future holds and who knows you may in later life study art again. My GCSE teachers loved one set of students who did things like made pictures out of toast (?)- I never got the modern art and just tried to make my paintings etc look like the real thing- not good enough apparently!
Thanks about the cupcakes too- they lady who teaches the course is just brilliant.

  4. Wow! I think your post is the one that deserves the “sooo soooo pretty” comment – love your cupcakes!! The snowman is my favourite too…I wouldn’t be able to eat it though, too adorable! πŸ™‚

My favourite subjects at school were French, Spanish and *whispers* Maths. I was hopeless at Art, Technology, PE etc…I used to dread those lessons as I was no good at being creative (or playing hockey!) so used to constantly have to ask the teachers for help!

  5. Those are beautiful – the detail in the elf, especially, is perfect! I’d love to do this – art (and biology) was my favourite at school – but I don’t know if I’d be able to bring myself to eat such works of art πŸ™‚

  6. They are amazing! I gave art up before GCSE, it never seemed to be a strong point & i ended up doing more academic stuff like latin yet now i hand make all cards i send, i make presents for those close to me. I will be cross stitching cards for close family for xmas again. And when it comes to food i love making it look pretty! I think it was down to the teachers at school really, i never got much creative encouragement for the art teachers yet my German teacher was amazing so it turned out that languages became my stronger subjects with German being my favourite.

How do you find the motivation for running in the cold? memories of last winter are putting me off but i know i need to do it!

  7. Jenny- with the running I just look forward to being warm once I get home! As long as it is not raining it is not too bad- if it is wet and you get cold then it is horrible, but if it is dry I just wear a lot of layers- and make some tea while I am in the shower after πŸ™‚
Eleanor- I don’t really want to eat them either (they are just plain fairy cakes)- too pretty! I think Andy will end up having them!

  8. your cupcakes are pieces of art! if i’m ever married, i’ll either have an elegant tofu cake or cupcake arrangement, most likely the latter. πŸ˜‰

favourite subject? english / writing. x

  9. Laura- I never even did textiles – always looks fun though.
Ali- I always loved clay πŸ™‚
