I have been noticing this recently. When I go to the gym to do classes, they take place in a studio with mirrors along the main wall, so you can always see yourself in the mirror.
Now I know exercise gear is not the most flattering, but I do not always like catching a glimpse of myself, especially at the beginning. (I used to wear baggy tshirts and baggy tracksuit bottoms, but then I realised that I would rather wear comfy sweat-wicking clothes and not care what I look like so much).
But what I have noticed recently is when I get to the class and I see myself in the mirror, I hone in on the parts I do not like. I see little bumps and bulges (really shown up by the fairly tight clothes I suppose) and I feel a little unhappy about my body. But then, something amazing happens. I start the class- either aerobics or body pump. When I am exercising and I glance at myself, I feel good about my body. During aerobics when we are leaping about, I feel proud that I can keep up with the high intensity cardio, and think about my strong heart and lungs. During body pump I catch sight of my arms or legs, and think about how strong they are getting. But the lumps and bumps also seem to disappear.
I have the opposite of this (almost) when I run. I leave the house looking presentable; hair tied back neatly, feeling good in my vest and capris. Then when I get home and catch sight of myself- hair all coming out, red face, dishevelled clothes, and think “I don’t look like that in my head”.
Do your perceptions of your body change when you exercise?
Now for some random pictures!
After my run (5 miles in the drizzle!) yesterday I cracked open a bar of Conscious chocolate which I won in Rachel’s giveaway– soooo yummy I have not had conscious chocolate in ages.
And before aerobics on Tuesday I tried a bounce bar! Also from Rachel 🙂
I was a little worried as it contained spirulina (remember when I tried it in a smoothie? Anyway it did not go well!)- well this was yummy! The almond taste came through and it tasted a lot like marzipan, but with crunchy nuts on the outside too! It gave me loads of energy for aerobics too- hooray! I wish I had tried one sooner!
Anything you wish you had tried sooner?

A little bowl of porridge with raisins and cinnamon (made with coconut milk)- I don’t like to be too full when I run, but I can’t run that far without anything either so I only used 25g oats I think.
I love the nuun tabs. I find it really hard to drink from the cups of water, plus I don’t want to drink too much before I set off, and I prefer to sip on my way around. So I take this with me on 10K + runs (and have it when I get home usually on shorter runs).
Alpro yoghurt and Lizi’s chocolate granola- the bomb! I was starving by this point as I finished the run at 12.10ish, and as we wandered around the shops for a bit got home after 1pm.
Fruity bread (from the freezer, not home-made sorry) with pb, plus nectarine and fig. Me and Andy also shared a
Copacabana which is milk and dark chocolate buttons and brazil nuts! Yum.
And one of these- I baked these for work but also took some around to their house for tea – I had to have one!
One of the scones I made with some blackcurrant spread and teapigs spiced winter tea. Mmmm.
Banana mashed with cocoa powder + oats + almond milk.
Chopped pear + blackberries + oats + almond milk + spices
Banana mashed with carob powder + oats + almond milk
Tinned peaches + oats + almond milk + cinnamon
Chopped apple + grated carrot + raisins + oats + almond milk + cinnamon
Dates + oats + coconut milk + cinnamon
Blackberries + oats + coconut milk + mixed spice
Cherries + oats + coconut milk + dessicated coconut
Tinned peaches + oats + coconut milk + dessicated coconut
Frozen raspberries + oats + coconut milk + drizzle of pb + dessicated coconut
Oooh bad pic! Cherries + cocoa + oats + coconut milk
Raisins + oats + coconut milk + cinnamon
Cherries + dried apple + oats + coconut milk + flaked almonds.
This is an example of the baking I could add to the prizes, but really it is just an excuse as I love them in the little bags so much! 🙂
This is me once I got home with my medal! I do love a good medal 🙂 Andy’s parents surprised us by coming down to see us (as it was almost a loop which you repeated I saw them just at the 5K mark) and so after we finished running we wandered around the lovely shops at Hatfield House before heading home.
The all important goody bag- including a £5 sweatshop voucher, kitkat and mikly way (no banana though), and a little Mr Benn pin.
I got a pirate one and Andy got a cowboy one! Pretty cool mementos I think.
Pb and white chocolate blondies- these are always super popular at work 🙂
Using my new Lakeland baking trays!
I am so pleased at how they turned out! I keep saying to Andy I think they look like they could be on a market stall. He thinks this is me insulting my baking, but I mean on a nice farmers market stall or something. Like at the start of Rachel Allen’s Bake show. Do you know what I mean?
I also made some dark chocolate brownies- again these are always popular.
Yummy 🙂
My table is covered in the little bags!
And brownie bags;
And one of each;
I think they look so pretty anyway! It was a lot of work to make them all, and bag them up and decorate them etc, but it is for a good cause and I am hoping people will see that.
I think I am looking a bit suspiciously at the camera! OK I have taken worse but it did make me laugh!
First I browned a red onion and some butternut squash (I cheated – gasp– by using ready chopped stuff- it was about 2/3 of the bag I think)- I used a tsp coconut oil in the pan.
Then I put 4 wraps in a dish, and put the veggies in there, and then sprinkled with some goats cheese. This goats cheese was herby stuff from
The folding is the hardest part!
Then covered them in tomato sauce- Lucy used passata I think, but I only had tinned tomatoes so I reduced it in a pan for a bit with some sundried tomato paste. Could have done with some more but I don’t like them too saucy.
I had one and a half with some salad, and they were lovely- a nice change from our usual bean wraps. If I made them again I probably would add some beans, or maybe some other veggies, but I loved the goats cheese and butternut combo. 🙂
Yum.
I used the recipe from
We walked up to the allotment (and my parents could not resist doing some weeding even though we were just going to look!)- and then came home to warm up- coffee for them and tea for me. My first “real” cup of tea for 4 weeks I think- ah teapot how I have missed you. My scone used up the last of my meridian raspberry spread- and it was delicious 🙂
I have also been baking (bribes for work)- but I will save that for tomorrow- this is just a hint- any guesses?
Yup! 6 jars of DCD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
